The Right to Buy was
introduced in 1980 as a means to extend home ownership amongst those
who had traditionally rented. The scheme allows tenants to buy
their home at a discount to the full market value.
Since 1980 more than 2 million
properties have been sold to the occupiers. This has allowed them to

- free them to improve
their accommodation in any way they want

profit on the sale of their property some years later.
Around 60,000
properties are purchased via the Right to Buy scheme every year. You
